Doug Aoki teaches in the Department of Sociology at the University of Alberta. He writes on the psychoanalysis of culture and assigns Far Side cartoons as reading for his theory courses, causing some of his colleagues to suspect that he isn’t a real sociologist at all. Not entirely for that reason, he is a serious student of Shintani Wado-kai Karate-do, and is currently working on how Lacanian and other social theory work through the esoteric violence of the way of the empty hand.
