Daniel Weissbort’s biography
Daniel
Weissbort, a friend of Ted Hughes's from their student
days at Cambridge, is currently writing a book on Ted Hughes
and Translation for Oxford
University Press. In the mid-60's, Ted and Daniel co-founded
the magazine, Modern Poetry in Translation, which Daniel
continues to edit. Daniel
Weissbort also prepared the literal draft of Pushkin's poem,
The Prophet, which is thought to be Ted Hughes's last poem in
translation.
Daniel Weissbort taught for nearly 30 years at the University of Iowa,
as Director of the MFA Program in Translation, returning to his
native England in
1999. He is currently completing a Historical Reader in Translation
Studies, to be published by Oxford University Press. Anvil Press
will shortly publish his translational
memoir of the late Nobel Laureate, Joseph Brodsky, From Russian with Love. Anvil
also publishes Weissbort's own poetry.
