George McWhirter’s biography

George McWhirter has taught in Ireland, Spain, and since 1970, at the University of British Columbia's Creative Writing, where he received the Killam Prize for teaching in 1998. An award-winning poet, prose writer and translator, he has published three novels, three books of short stories, seven books of poetry, and three books of translation. He edited the anthology of Mexican poetry, Where Words Like Monarchs Fly (Anvil, 1999), and with Betty Ferber co-edited Eyes to See Otherwise: The Selected Poems of Homero Aridjis, 1960-2000 (Carcanet, 2001, and New Directions, 2002), for which he was also the principal translator. His new collection of poetry, The Book of Contradictions (Oolichan), was released fall 2002.
