Graham Dee's Grandpa

Written by Kim Mancini
Illustrated by Nancy Walker

Graham Dee is an explorer. He loves to explore outdoors, especially when it snows.

It’s snowing today but Graham Dee’s not allowed to go out and explore. It’s too, too windy. “I might blow away!” he says.

Graham Dee sits on the couch. He is so, so bored with all his toys. “I wish Grandpa were here,” he says.

He walks up to the window and looks out at the whirlwind of snow. He fogs up the glass and writes his name in his breath.

Up, up in the sky, there is a streak of lightning.
He jumps up when the doorbell rings and runs down the hallway to the front door.

Grandpa is there kicking snow off his boots, with his grey hair sticking straight up from the wind. Graham Dee loves to spend time with his Grandpa because Grandpa is an explorer too. “Now we can explore together. Where should we go first?” Graham Dee asks.

They travel to the rainforest in the laundry room and listen to the drip, drip, drips. Graham Dee climbs Grandpa like a tree. “How’s the air up there?” asks Grandpa and Graham Dee swings down his strong arm branches.

They explore the deep, dark caves in the basement and under the stairs.

“What if there’s a bear?” Graham Dee asks.

“It’s okay, we’ll scare them away with our grr, Grr, GRR’S!” Grandpa replies.

“Let’s look for treasure,” says Graham Dee and they pillage every drawer in the house, looking for gold coins and jewel encrusted crowns.

“It’s time for a bath,” says Mom, and they march to the bathroom like dressed up kings.

In the bathtub, Graham Dee is a pirate who holds Grandpa captive. “Arr, you’ll have to walk the plank,” says Graham Dee. They splash each other and laugh, and go under to explore the deep, blue sea. When the water gets cold they are done exploring.

Graham Dee breathes into the mirror and writes his name in his breath. Grandpa writes his name too.

And at the dinner table they cut each other’s food. “Would you like a piece of pie?” asks Grandpa.

“Oh yes please.”

After dinner, Grandpa turns on the radio and they travel back in time, dancing dances like the Jitterbug, the Bunny Hop, and the Egyptian.

They dance around and around in circles until they both fall down.

“It’s time for bed,” says Mom and Grandpa carries Graham Dee down the hall.

“Goodnight Graham Dee,” says Grandpa.

“Grandpa, let’s explore again soon.”
