It
has been nearly two years since the Centre for the Study of Curriculum
and Instruction announced that a new journal by graduate students would
be established. The initial overture was greeted by the question, "Does
the field of education really need another journal?" A group of graduate
students concluded: "YES", Graduate students in education at U.B.C.
and even across Canada need their own journal, since few of the 1200
graduate students currently enrolled in education at U.B.C. enter educational
discourse by publishing in scholarly journals.
This
journal bridges the gap between the academic perspective and the practitioner's
point of view. It is the voice of the graduate student and the practitioner,
for it is written by students who are also practitioners. They are currently
grappling with issues arising in practice, thereby generating educational
insights.
It
was a coincidence that a group of art and music education students commited
themselves to creating the first issue. The support of the Department
of Visual and Performing Arts in Education and the sponsor of this publication,
the Centre for the Study of Curriculum and Instruction has made it possible
to keep this commitment.
We
are grateful for the support of fellow students, staff and faculty and
proud to present the first issue of Educational Insights, a special
issue on research in Art and Music Education
